Bread is Dead!

The message was “Bread is Dead!” It was heard during daily mass at St. Paul Catholic Church in Colorado Springs, CO. The homily was a simple one especially since most of the congregation consisted of students from the adjacent Catholic School. Though sometimes, it is the simplest messages that are easiest to learn from.

The priest began by explaining the murderous steps bread goes through to be created…they pulverize the wheat… they pump it with foreign ingredients…they knead it as dough …  then they punch it down and divide it…and finally,  just for good measure, they bake it at hundreds of degrees. Surely by the time it is considered bread, it is truly dead… beaten to a pulp. Of course, the priest who exclaimed the “Bread is Dead!” wasn’t merely speaking of food. He was alluding to his point that the true bread of everlasting life is in Jesus Christ through the Eucharist. However, the way in which he explained, its a lesson that can also be applied to your everyday meal consumption as well.

Even beyond what he described, many times, the bread you find in stores has additional steps to its ‘manufacturing’ process. Often, to increase shelf life beyond what nature would allow, they add preservatives and other factory-made, so-called nutrients to it. Or, instead of a natural ingredient for sweetness, they will throw in high fructose corn syrup or some genetically modified substance worthy of praise by Monsanto. Ultimately, most bread found in stores is not only dead, but a form of a Franken-bread that is patched together via questionable methods.

So in addition to the priest’s point of finding everlasting life through Jesus, you can at the very least improve and elongate your (worldly) life by consuming more raw or alive foods. Bread is Dead! So cut back on consuming it, especially if its the kind that can last on a shelf until Jesus’ next coming….

Raw milk for example is one vehicle though which one can consume an alive food. Alive or raw foods help populate the gut with beneficial bacteria. These beneficial bacteria can then ward off the bad bacteria when they try to invade your body. Opting for vegetables or a fermented vegetable drink can also provide your body’s immune system with the proper nutrients to combat the harmful bacteria.

Regardless of your faith, consuming more raw foods in your diet won’t give you everlasting life, but they can possibly add some years and health to your Earthly life.
