Because the water supply may be contaminated, it would be wise to stock up on at least 2 weeks of water. A normal usage would be 1 gallon per person per day. If you bottle at home, make sure to use food grade containers. A rotation of 6-12 months would be acceptable. In addition, it would also be beneficial to have a water purification device, and mark an alternative water source for retrieval such as a local creek or stream.

In general, it is wise to have enough food accessible to feed your family for 3 months. The ultimate goal is to eventually build that supply to sustain for the length of a year. There are many resources available online and in print that you can use to figure out the specifics on what to stash. You should do your own research to see what fits you and your family’s needs.

But to do a quick summary, a good place to start is to figure out which foods your family normally consumes. Then calculate how much that would amount to over the course of 3 months. Also, stock up on any bulk items on sale that you might use.

The intent here is to incorporate your storage along with your normal diet. Rotate your supply and replenish as you consume. Even if national calamity is averted, this is still an easy and way to cut back on expenses.

Once you are comfortable with a basic foundation for your ‘food cellar’ you should focus on items for long term storage. They will have a shelf life for numerous years and allow you to make a lot of your own food from scratch. These include:

  • Oats
  • Wheat
  • Spaghetti
  • Rice
  • Bean Varieties
  • Flour
  • Oils
  • Sugar
  • Salt
  • Pepper
  • Powdered Milk

If you are able to gather all of these foods, you will also need to acquire processors, recipes, and even learn how to can food. This is just a general list; you can personalize it so it better fits your needs.
